Introduction

Prestressed concrete bridge design has been a specialty of Jacobs for many years. However their skills extend far beyond this narrow area to the study, design, contract administration and supervision of construction of highways and bridges of all types. Our scope in this field includes highways, expressways, distributor roads, small feeder and access roads in both urban and rural environments. Computer aided design and drafting (MOSS and other programs) are used extensively as part of the design process.

Highways and bridges services include:

Studies and designs typically include traffic demand forecasts, based on surveys or modelling; land demand forecasts, based on alignment options and constraints; utility surveys and diversion requirements; environmental impact assessment; carriageway pavement design; design of highway structures; drainage designs, traffic management measures; leading to estimated costs, construction programming and supervision.

Projects

Tolo Highway Shatin To Tai Po.jpg (11131 bytes) Tolo Highway

Client: Highways Department, Hong Kong Government

Jacobs undertook investigation, design and supervision of construction of the New Territories Trunk Road System from Shatin to Tai Po including 7.3km new dual three carriageway, two major interchanges and several grade separted crossings which incorporated 16 bridges. Only 1.4km of the route lay on existing or previously reclaimed ground. The remainder lay either on the foreshore or across the sea involving substantial reclamation.

Client: Highways Department

Design and supervision of construction for widening of existing approximately 2.5km long Castle Peak Road from Siu Lam to So Kwun Tan from 7.3km wide carriageway to dual 2-lane carriageway; construction of a 7.3m wide vehicular bridge over So Kwan Wat River, construction of a footbridge and noise barrier and implementation of noise insulation works.

These structures form part of the Lantau Fixed Crossing linking the Kowloon Peninsula to Lantau Island. Jaocbs China was part of the team which provided independent detailed structural appraisal of the structure, which was designed as part of a design and construct contract. The services also included advice and checking during the construction stage of the project.

The Kap Shui Mun bridge has a 400m main span which is a steel box girder with composite concrete deck construction, whilst the approaches are incrementally launched prestressed concrete. The Ma Wan Viaduct, 500m long with 80m spans, and a twin level deck is of prestressed concrete.

Both the Kap Shui Mun Bridge and the Ma Wan Viaducts decks, carry 8 vehicular traffic lanes and two railway tracks on two levels.

Jacobs were the structural engineering consultant for the design of the Rumsey Street Flyover extending along Connaught Road, Central. This forms part of the main arterial route along the north of Hong Kong Island. We were responsible for the design of this 940m long dual 3 lane flyover which forms part of the scheme to upgrade Connaught Road through Central.

Jacobs were responsible for the design audit of the bridge to ensure its compliance with international standards. Monitoring the quality of fabrication of cables, hangers and other components; and quality of construction on site were also undertaken for this suspension bridge with a main span of 452m designed to carry six lanes of traffic.

Design and supervision of construction for two footbridges, extensive utilities diversion and provision over 2.4km of new 1000 and 800mm diameter welded steel watermain and associated, values, rehabilitation of drains, sewers, signs, lighting and amenity areas, as well as complete carriageway reconstruction.
